THE BENCH CHANGES HANDS… AGAIN. ⚖️👩🏾‍⚖️

After years at the helm, Luke Malaba exits the stage robe folded, judgments archived, and WhatsApp legal analysts suddenly pretending they have always understood constitutional law.

Enter the new Chief Justice, Elizabeth Gwaunza.

Zimbabweans are now doing what Zimbabweans do best:
forming legal opinions without reading a single judgment.

One camp says:

“A new era for the judiciary has arrived.”

Another says:

“We will wait for the first constitutional case before we celebrate.”

Lawyers meanwhile are simply praying:

“May the filing system work consistently and may urgent chamber applications not disappear mysteriously into the judicial wilderness.” 😭

Chief Justice Malaba’s era will likely be remembered for:

  • major constitutional debates,
  • politically sensitive judgments,
  • court digitalisation efforts,
  • and enough legal commentary to keep Facebook lawyers employed full-time.

Now attention shifts to Chief Justice Gwaunza and what many expect could be a philosophy centred on:

  • judicial stability,
  • institutional continuity,
  • procedural discipline,
  • measured jurisprudence,
  • and continued modernization of court systems.

And let’s be honest in Zimbabwe, every senior judicial appointment immediately produces:

  1. constitutional experts,
  2. political analysts,
  3. and relatives suddenly asking lawyers to “quickly explain section something-something.”

But beyond the satire, judicial transitions matter.
Businesses watch. Investors watch. Litigants watch. Citizens watch.

Because courts are not just buildings with gowns and Latin phrases.
They are where contracts survive, property rights are defended, and national disputes eventually land bundled in lever-arch files thicker than a family Bible.

⚖️ The wigs may change.
The pressure never does.
